What lyophilization does
Lyophilization removes water through sublimation. The compound is frozen first, then placed under vacuum. At low pressure, ice converts directly to vapor without passing through a liquid phase. The result is a porous, dry cake of the original compound with its structure largely intact.
The process preserves the compound without the chemical changes that heat-based drying would cause. Peptides are fragile molecules. Standard drying temperatures would destroy them.
Nitrogen backfill and vacuum sealing
After lyophilization, quality suppliers seal vials under nitrogen or vacuum. Oxygen and moisture are the primary degradants for peptides in storage. Nitrogen backfill displaces oxygen before sealing. When you open a vial and hear a small hiss, that is the pressure equalization as atmospheric air enters.

Lyophilized peptides are stable at 2 to 8°C for 24 months in most cases. At 4°C (refrigerator temperature), stability typically runs 6-12 months depending on the compound. At room temperature, degradation accelerates significantly. Some shorter sequences show measurable loss within weeks at ambient temperature.

Compound-specific differences
Stability varies meaningfully across peptide classes. GLP-1 analogues are among the more stable sequences at low temperature. BPC-157 and TB-500 are well-characterized and stable under standard conditions. Shorter sequences like Ipamorelin are generally stable but more sensitive to repeated temperature cycling. Always store at the lower end of the recommended range when in doubt.
Signs of degradation
